Medical Update From Switzerland: 90° Scoliosis and Surgical Indication

The consultation in Switzerland gave the family a clearer answer: Sofia’s spinal deformity is severe, surgery is indicated, and careful preparation must happen first.

What the doctors documented

The medical report describes neuromuscular thoracolumbar scoliosis of approximately 90 degrees in a child with severe spastic motor impairment. This is a major spinal deformity, not a cosmetic concern.

What 90 degrees means

At this level of curvature, the trunk can become increasingly unbalanced. Positioning, sitting and respiratory mechanics can become more difficult as the deformity progresses.

The consultation was not only a “yes” to surgery

The team also identified the preparation needed before an operation: detailed imaging, anesthesia assessment, interdisciplinary review and attention to Sofia’s nutritional status.

Nutrition is part of the plan

Sofia has had a history of malnutrition and feeding difficulty. Her gastrostomy and the family’s work to improve weight are therefore directly connected to surgical readiness.

What happens next

The family must complete the preoperative stage in Switzerland and continue daily treatment at home while fundraising for the medical costs, travel and accommodation.

A clear next step

Knowing the plan brings responsibility as well as hope. The family now needs the resources to follow it.
